How to Shoot Real Estate Photography

Getting started with real estate photography can be an exciting prospect. After all, it allows you to showcase a property in a unique way and attract the attention of buyers looking to purchase a home. But before you begin shooting, it’s important to understand how to shoot the right photos and what to expect.

1. Shoot Variety

The best real estate photos feature variety in the angles and compositions of the shots so that you have lots to choose from when packaging them up for your client. This is especially true of interior images, as it will give the home more visual appeal.

2. Staging

If you are photographing a house for sale, be sure to set it up in a way that feels welcoming and complete. This means removing clutter, keeping the furniture in good condition, and arranging rooms so that the home’s personality shines through.

3. Remove Lens Distortion and Vignetting

Camera lenses stretch light into a rectangular shape, and when this happens, it can distort an image. This can create vertical lines that look slanted or horizontal lines that appear to be off-balance. It is particularly noticeable in real estate photographs, as these lines can be very distracting to the viewer.

4. Remove Clutter

As you take pictures of a property, be sure to clear out any excess clutter that could be distracting from the property’s appeal. You should also remove any personal belongings from the space, such as children’s toys and artwork.

5. Avoid Using an Ultra Wide Angle Lens

Many inexperienced real estate photographers opt to use a fisheye lens for their shots, which can result in distortion and an uneven picture. While this is fine for a few photos, it’s not the best choice for all of your real estate photos.

6. White Balance

The color of an object can be difficult to capture in a photograph, which makes it even more important to ensure that the colors are accurate. This can be a challenge, but it’s a problem that is often solved by shooting RAW images so that you can make any necessary changes to the color in post-processing.

7. Lighting

Taking exterior real estate photos can be tricky, as you need to capture the property’s appearance in the right amount of light. This can be challenging on sunny days, so it’s best to schedule the shoot for a time when the sun is behind the house and you can get the most natural lighting possible.

8. Adjust the White Balance

The white balance in a photo can be altered to make it more pleasing to the eye. This can be done by changing the white balance of the camera or by editing the image with software that helps with this process.

9. Use a Remote Trigger

A remote trigger is an essential tool for photographers who are shooting indoors, as it can prevent them from accidentally bumping their cameras or causing them to shake during the shot. It also helps reduce the blur that can occur when shaking the camera.
